Target Information

Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, consisting of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. These subunits include 4 RNA species and approximately 80 distinct proteins.
This gene encodes a cytoplasmic ribosomal protein, a component of the 40S subunit, belonging to the S6E family. It is the major substrate of protein kinases in the ribosome, with five C-terminal serine residues phosphorylated by different kinases. Phosphorylation is induced by growth factors, tumor-promoting agents, and mitogens, while dephosphorylation occurs at growth arrest.
The protein may regulate cell growth and proliferation through selective translation of specific mRNA classes. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are dispersed throughout the genome.
