IL-10은 단핵구(monocyte)에서 주로 생성되는 사이토카인으로, 일부 림프구에서도 발현됩니다. 이 단백질은 면역 조절 및 염증 반응에 관여하며, Th1 사이토카인, MHC class II 항원, 그리고 대식세포의 공자극 분자 발현을 억제합니다. 또한 B세포의 생존, 증식, 항체 생성을 촉진하며 NF-kappa B 활성을 차단하고 JAK-STAT 신호전달 경로 조절에 관여합니다. 마우스의 knockout 연구에서는 장내 면역 조절에 필수적인 역할을 함이 확인되었습니다. IL10 유전자 변이는 HIV-1 감염 및 류머티즘 관절염의 감수성과 관련이 있습니다. 관련 질환으로는 Graft-Versus-Host Disease 및 Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1이 보고되어 있습니다.
