Target Information
Mammalian mitochondrial ribosomal proteins are encoded by nuclear genes and assist in protein synthesis within the mitochondrion. Mitochondrial ribosomes (mitoribosomes) consist of a small 28S subunit and a large 39S subunit, with about 75% protein to rRNA composition, unlike prokaryotic ribosomes. Prokaryotic ribosomes contain a 5S rRNA, which mammalian mitoribosomes lack. The proteins comprising the mitoribosome vary significantly among species, preventing easy recognition by sequence homology.
This gene encodes a 28S subunit protein involved in apoptotic pathways initiated by TNF-α, Fas ligand, and IFN-γ. The protein may bind ATP/GTP and act as a functional partner of mitoribosomal protein S27. Splice variants differing in the 5′ UTR encode the same protein, and pseudogenes are located on chromosomes 1q and 2q.
