Target Information
DNA methylation, the addition of methyl groups to cytosine bases in CpG dinucleotides, is essential for proper development and gene regulation. MBD4 (also known as MED1) is a mammalian demethylase enzyme associated with a methyl-CpG-binding domain (MBD). It catalyzes the removal of methyl groups from methylated cytosines, converting them back to cytosine.
MBD family proteins (MeCP2, MBD1, MBD2, MBD3, and MBD4) play key roles in transcriptional repression and DNA methylation signaling. MBD4 shares homology with bacterial base excision repair DNA N-glycosylases/lyases and is known to be mutated in some microsatellite unstable tumors.
