Target Information
In T lymphocytes, Ca++ entry following antigen-receptor binding occurs through store-operated Ca++-release-activated Ca++ (CRAC) channels composed of ORAI1 and STIM1. STIM1 acts as a Ca++ sensor and activates CRAC channels by migrating from ER-like Ca++ stores to the plasma membrane. A related molecule, STIM2, inhibits STIM1-mediated Ca++ entry and can form complexes with STIM1, suggesting a coordinated role in Ca++ regulation. At least three isoforms of STIM2 are known.
