Target Information
Mitochondrial creatine kinase (MtCK) mediates the transfer of high-energy phosphate from mitochondria to cytosolic creatine. It belongs to the creatine kinase isoenzyme family, existing as sarcomeric and ubiquitous isoenzymes encoded by separate genes. MtCK occurs in dimeric and octameric forms, unlike the exclusively dimeric cytosolic isoenzymes. Sarcomeric MtCK shares 80% homology with ubiquitous MtCK. This gene includes sequences homologous to motifs found in nuclear genes encoding mitochondrial proteins, potentially crucial for coordinated activation during mitochondrial biogenesis. Three transcript variants encoding the same protein have been identified.
