Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the phospholipase A2 (PLA2) family, a group of enzymes varying in sequence, function, localization, and cation requirements. PLA2G2A is a secreted, calcium-dependent extracellular enzyme of group II PLA2 with low molecular mass. It catalyzes the hydrolysis of the sn-2 fatty acid acyl ester bond in phosphoglycerides, releasing free fatty acids and lysophospholipids, and plays a role in phospholipid metabolism regulation. Multiple alternatively spliced transcript variants with different 5′ UTRs have been identified.
