Target Information
Ribosomes are organelles that catalyze protein synthesis, consisting of a small 40S subunit and a large 60S subunit. Together, these subunits include 4 RNA species and approximately 80 distinct proteins. This gene encodes a ribosomal protein that is part of the 40S subunit and belongs to the S27E family. It contains a C4-type zinc finger domain capable of binding zinc and nucleic acids. The protein is mainly located in the cytoplasm but can also be detected in the nucleus. Studies in rat indicate ribosomal protein S27 is near ribosomal protein S18 in the 40S subunit and linked to translation initiation factor eIF3. Multiple processed pseudogenes of this gene are dispersed throughout the genome.
