Target Information
The PER3 gene belongs to the Period family and is expressed in a circadian pattern in the suprachiasmatic nucleus, the main circadian pacemaker in the mammalian brain. It plays a role in regulating circadian rhythms of locomotor activity, metabolism, and behavior.
PER3 expression is activated by CLOCK/ARNTL heterodimers and repressed via a feedback loop involving PER/CRY heterodimers. Polymorphisms in this gene have been associated with sleep disorders. Multiple transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified.
