Target Information
PGA5 (Pepsinogen 5, group I / Pepsinogen A)
Pepsinogens are inactive precursors of pepsin, the major acid protease in the stomach. Pepsin is secreted by the gastric mucosa and activated from pepsinogen through removal of a 41 amino acid N-terminal segment. It functions optimally at pH 1–3 and cleaves peptide bonds involving aromatic amino acids. PGA5 belongs to the pepsin A1 subfamily and is the predominant endopeptidase in vertebrate gastric juice. It is inhibited by ovUS-1, a uterine serpin.
