Target Information

Zhou et al. have identified a protein that inhibits multinucleate osteoclast formation in murine osteoblast and spleen cell co-cultures. This protein, named Osteoclast Inhibitory Lectin (OCIL), also suppresses osteoclast formation in spleen cell cultures treated with RANKL and M-CSF.
mOCIL acts directly on macrophage/monocyte cells, showing inhibitory effects even when stromal and lymphocytic cells are removed.
It completely inhibits osteoclast formation during the proliferative phase and shows about 70% inhibition during differentiation.

OCIL mRNA expression in osteoblasts is enhanced by parathyroid hormone, calcitriol, interleukin-1, IL-11, and retinoic acid.
OCIL is expressed in osteoblasts, chondrocytes, and various extraskeletal tissues.
Because OCIL expression is similar to RANKL distribution, it is suggested that OCIL and RANKL may interact in skeletal and extracellular tissues.
