Target Information
Beta-catenin is an adherens junction (AJ) protein involved in cell-cell adhesion and epithelial layer maintenance. It interacts with E-cadherin and alpha-catenin to anchor the E-cadherin complex to the actin cytoskeleton. Beta-catenin also associates with complexes containing adenomatous polyposis coli protein and microtubules, participating in signaling pathways such as Wnt/Wingless.
It is expressed in various hair follicle cell types and epithelial structures. Dysregulation of beta-catenin is implicated in diseases such as pilomatrixoma, medulloblastoma, colorectal cancer, ovarian cancer, and other solid tumors. In the nucleus, beta-catenin co-activates Lef/Tcf transcription factors, promoting expression of genes like cyclin D and c-myc, which drive cell proliferation and tumorigenesis.
