P2Y12 belongs to the family of G-protein coupled receptors (GPCRs).
This receptor family has multiple subtypes with overlapping pharmacological selectivity for adenosine and uridine nucleotides.
P2Y12 is involved in platelet aggregation and is a potential therapeutic target for thromboembolic and other clotting disorders.
Two transcript variants encoding the same isoform have been identified.
Expression has been reported in platelets, spinal cord, and various brain regions.
ESTs for P2Y12 have been found in B-cell/lung/testis, brain, embryo, prostate, eye, kidney carcinoma, and colon carcinoma libraries.
