Target Information
GPI gene encodes a multifunctional phosphoglucose isomerase involved in energy metabolism. The encoded protein catalyzes the reversible isomerization of glucose-6-phosphate and fructose-6-phosphate. It acts as a dimeric enzyme functioning both in cytoplasmic glycolysis/gluconeogenesis and as a neurotrophic factor outside the cell for spinal and sensory neurons. Mutations in this gene can cause nonspherocytic hemolytic anemia, hydrops fetalis, neonatal death, and neurological impairment.
