Target Information
The inhibitor of apoptosis (IAP) family of proteins regulates programmed cell death triggered by various stimuli. All IAPs have at least one baculovirus IAP repeat (BIR) motif essential for anti-apoptotic activity. A serine protease named Omi/HtrA2 is released from mitochondria upon induction of apoptosis. Omi binds to IAP and contains a conserved IAP-binding motif (AVPS) at its N-terminus. Overexpression of Omi in the cytoplasm induces apoptosis, suggesting its role in the mitochondrial apoptotic pathway.
