Target Information

Heat shock proteins (HSPs) are highly conserved and abundantly expressed proteins with diverse functions, including:

• Assembly and sequestering of multiprotein complexes
• Transportation of nascent polypeptide chains across cellular membranes
• Regulation of protein folding

HSPs (also known as molecular chaperones) are grouped into six major families:

1. HSP 90
2. HSP 70
3. HSP 60
4. Low molecular weight HSPs
5. Immunophilins
6. HSP 110 family

The low molecular weight family includes HSP 10, HSP 20, HSP 27 (Heme Oxygenase 1), HSP 32, and HSP 40.
Chaperonins are ATP-dependent proteins that facilitate proper folding of substrate proteins. Typical examples include E. coli GroEL and GroES (HSP 10).
HSP 10 forms a heptameric ring of identical 10 kDa subunits that bind to each end of GroEL, forming a symmetric, functional heterodimer.
