Target Information
Hyaluronic acid (HA) is a high molecular weight unbranched polysaccharide found in bacteria to mammals and is a key component of the extracellular matrix. It consists of alternating glucuronic acid and N-acetylglucosamine residues linked by β-1,3 and β-1,4 glycosidic bonds. HA is synthesized by membrane-bound synthases and extruded into the extracellular space, serving roles in space filling, joint lubrication, and cellular migration. It is actively produced during wound healing and tissue repair, aiding in blood vessel and fibroblast ingrowth. Altered HA levels are associated with inflammatory and degenerative arthropathies such as rheumatoid arthritis. HA interaction with CD44 is crucial for leukocyte homing, and HA receptor overexpression correlates with tumor metastasis. HAS1 belongs to a vertebrate gene family encoding hyaluronan synthases, showing significant homology to the hasA gene product of Streptococcus pyogenes.
