Specificity Comments:
Pulmonary surfactant lowers surface tension at the air-liquid interface in alveoli, essential for normal respiration. It includes four surfactant-associated proteins (SP-A, SP-B, SP-C, SP-D).
SP-B and SP-C are hydrophobic proteins that associate with lipids to promote absorption of surfactant phospholipids and reduce surface tension.
SP-A and SP-D are large multimeric calcium-dependent lectins (Collectins) contributing to innate immunity. Both SP-A and SP-D bind to bacterial cell wall lipids and aid in microbial clearance.

Target Information

Surfactant protein D (SP-D) is synthesized and secreted by lung epithelial cells. It belongs to group III of C-type lectins, characterized by multiple globular head regions linked by triple-helical collagen-like strands.
This group includes SP-A, mannan-binding protein, conglutinin, and collectin-43, all binding to the C1q receptor on various cells.
SP-D and SP-A enhance oxygen radical production by alveolar macrophages.
