Target Information
Metallothionein (MT) is a sulfhydryl- and cysteine-rich protein found in microorganisms, plants, and all invertebrate and vertebrate animals. Metallothioneins are low-molecular-weight proteins involved in cell growth, repair, and differentiation. They play key roles in metal ion detoxification, protecting cells from cadmium, mercury, and copper toxicity. As stress-response proteins and free radical scavengers, metallothioneins contribute to inflammation regulation and cellular protection against reactive oxygen species, radiation, and mutagens. They are widely expressed in heart, liver, kidney, breast, and testis tissues.
