S100A12은 2개의 EF-hand 칼슘 결합 모티프를 포함하는 S100 단백질 패밀리의 구성원입니다. S100 단백질은 다양한 세포의 세포질 및/또는 핵에 존재하며, 세포 주기 진행 및 분화와 같은 여러 세포 과정의 조절에 관여합니다.
S100A12는 특정 칼슘 의존적 신호전달 경로에 관여하며, 세포골격 구성요소에 대한 조절 효과를 통해 다양한 호중구 활동을 조절할 수 있습니다. 또한 S100A12는 RAGE의 리간드로 알려져 있으며, RAGE와의 상호작용은 단핵구, 림프구 및 내피세포의 활성화를 유도합니다.
핵 인자 카파 B(NF-κB)는 S100A12/RAGE에 의해 활성화되며, 염증 반응의 주요 전사 인자로 작용합니다. 또한 S100A12는 항균 특성을 가지는 것으로 보고되었습니다.
