Target Information
Ionotropic receptor with a probable role in the modulation of auditory stimuli. Agonist binding may induce a conformational change affecting all subunits, leading to the opening of an ion-conducting channel across the plasma membrane. The channel is permeable to divalent cations including calcium, whose influx may activate a potassium current that hyperpolarizes the cell membrane. In the ear, this may reduce basilar membrane motion, alter auditory nerve fiber activity, and decrease the dynamic hearing range, potentially protecting against acoustic trauma.
