Target Information
Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme involved in defense against reactive oxygen species (ROS).
SOD catalyzes the dismutation of superoxide radical anion (O₂⁻) to hydrogen peroxide, which is further converted to O₂ and H₂O by glutathione peroxidase and catalase.
Several classes of SOD have been identified:
- SOD1 (Cu, Zn-SOD): Intracellular enzyme found in all eukaryotes (32 kDa homodimer).
- SOD2 (Mn-SOD): Mitochondrial enzyme (80 kDa tetramer) located near the respiratory chain.
- SOD3 (EC-SOD): Extracellular enzyme expressed in lungs, vessel walls, and airways.
- SOD4 (CCS): Copper chaperone for superoxide dismutase that delivers Cu to Cu/Zn-SOD and activates it through direct Cu insertion.
