Target Information

CD81 (also known as TAPA-1) is a member of the tetraspanin family expressed on most nucleated cells, particularly germinal center B cells. It forms complexes with other tetraspanins, integrins, coreceptors, and MHC molecules, influencing cell adhesion, morphology, activation, proliferation, and differentiation of B and T cells.
In muscle tissue, CD81 promotes cell fusion and myotube maintenance. It also serves as a receptor for the hepatitis C virus (HCV).
Like other tetraspanins (CD9, CD37, CD53, CD63, CD82), CD81 is a cell-surface glycoprotein with four hydrophobic domains and mediates signal transduction events related to cell development and motility.
CD81 associates with CD19, CD21, Leu 13, and integrins on the cell membrane, contributing to immune signaling and viral entry. Antibodies to CD81 can exhibit anti-proliferative effects on lymphoid cell lines and may have implications in tumor biology.
