Target Information
The INK4a locus on chromosome 9p21 is frequently affected in human tumors. It encodes two structurally distinct tumor suppressor proteins, p16INK4a and ARF (p14ARF in human, P19ARF in mouse).
These proteins interact respectively with the retinoblastoma protein and p53 tumor suppressors, playing roles in cellular senescence and tumor suppression.
p14ARF (or P19ARF in mouse) can induce G1 and G2 phase arrest depending on functional p53.
Mouse and human ARF proteins differ in tumor suppression function, contributing to species-specific tumor susceptibility.
