Target Information
Phosphoinositide-specific phospholipase C (PLC) plays a crucial role in receptor-mediated signal transduction by generating two second messengers—inositol 1,4,5-triphosphate and diacylglycerol—from phosphatidylinositol 4,5-bisphosphate.
There are multiple mammalian PLC isozymes, including PLC beta1, beta2, beta3, beta4, gamma1, gamma2, delta1, delta2, and PLCe.
PLC delta1 acts as a calcium signal amplifier and is activated by an atypical GTP-binding protein. It also functions as an effector for GTP-binding protein transglutaminase II-mediated oxytocin receptor and alpha1B-adrenoreceptor signaling.
Mouse PLC delta1 is highly expressed in brain, heart, lung, and testis. Abnormal accumulation of PLC delta has been observed in brains of Alzheimer’s disease patients, suggesting a potential role in disease pathology.
PLC delta2 is expressed in type II intestinal metaplasia and adenocarcinoma, and its expression may serve as a marker of gastric malignant transformation.
