Target Information
The protein encoded by this gene is an enzymatic component of the tricarboxylic acid cycle (Krebs cycle) and catalyzes the formation of L-malate from fumarate. It exists in both cytosolic and N-terminal extended mitochondrial forms. The mitochondrial form undergoes processing to yield the same mature form as in the cytoplasm. This protein functions as a homotetramer and is similar to thermostable class II fumarases. Mutations may result in fumarase deficiency, leading to progressive encephalopathy.
