Target Information

BI-1 (Bax Inhibitor 1) is an anti-apoptotic protein associated with protection from apoptosis induced by endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress. BI-1 contains multiple transmembrane domains, localizes to ER membranes, and exhibits conserved cytoprotective functions in animals and plants.
It suppresses apoptosis triggered by the proapoptotic protein Bax and other stimuli. Cells from BI-1 knockout mice are hypersensitive to apoptosis induced by ER stress agents (thapsigargin, tunicamycin, brefeldin A) or ischemia-reperfusion injury. Conversely, BI-1 overexpression provides protection against such stress-induced apoptosis, potentially through regulation of ER Ca²⁺ handling.
