Cystatin C는 type 2 cystatin 초가족에 속하는 강력한 cysteine proteinase 억제 단백질로, 내인성(lysosomal cathepsins) 및 병원성 단백질분해효소를 억제합니다.
13 kDa의 분비 단백질로 생물학적 체액에 높은 농도로 존재하며, 모든 인간 핵세포에서 발현되는 것으로 알려져 있습니다.
Cystatin C의 변화는 죽상동맥경화증, 아밀로이드 혈관병증, 심근경색 등 다양한 심혈관 질환에서 보고되었습니다.
