Target Information
ABCA4 (ATP-Binding Cassette, Subfamily A, Member 4), also known as ABCR, is a protein encoded by the ABCA4 gene in humans. It belongs to the ABC transporter gene sub-family A (ABC1), found exclusively in multicellular eukaryotes.
This gene is mapped to chromosome 1p21–p13 and is expressed exclusively in retina photoreceptor cells, mediating the transport of essential molecules across the photoreceptor cell membrane.
Immunofluorescence and Western blot analyses show ABCR presence in foveal and peripheral cone and rod photoreceptors.
Loss of central vision in Stargardt macular dystrophy is associated with ABCR-mediated foveal cone degeneration.
