Target Information
Sall1 encodes a zinc finger protein that functions as a transcriptional repressor and interacts with histone deacetylase and components of the chromatin remodeling NuRD complex. It acts as a microglial signature gene and is expressed abundantly in mesenchyme-derived structures, renal tubules, and podocytes. Sall1 is essential for maintaining nephron progenitor cell stemness by preventing premature differentiation. Mutations in SALL1 cause Townes-Brocks syndrome and bronchio-oto-renal syndrome, leading to developmental anomalies such as dysplastic ears, polydactyly, and imperforate anus. Two transcript variants encoding distinct isoforms have been identified.
