Target Information

SOX9 plays a crucial role in sex determination and differentiation of Sertoli cells. It is involved in chondrogenesis and regulates genes related to cartilage formation by acting as a transcription factor. Translocation of SOX9 can lead to campomelic dysplasia. It is essential for testis formation from fetal gonads and participates in neuron-glia differentiation in the developing spinal cord. SOX9 also influences prostate epithelial development and maintenance, and its dysregulation is associated with prostate cancer progression. Additionally, it contributes to neural crest precursor formation and melanin production regulation. Expression has been observed in adult testis, heart, and fetal brain.
