Target Information
PEX5 binds to the C-terminal PTS1-type tripeptide peroxisomal targeting signal (SKL-type) and plays an essential role in peroxisomal protein import.
Peroxins (PEXs) are critical for assembling functional peroxisomes.
Defects in PEX5 are associated with several peroxisomal biogenesis disorders (PBDs), including:
- Neonatal adrenoleukodystrophy (NALD)
- Zellweger syndrome (ZWS)
- Infantile Refsum disease (IRD)
These disorders are autosomal recessive and characterized by defects in peroxisomal matrix protein import.
Alternatively spliced transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified.
