Target Information

The protein encoded by this gene is the fifth component of complement, which plays an important role in inflammatory and cell-killing processes. It consists of alpha and beta polypeptide chains linked by a disulfide bridge. The activation peptide C5a, an anaphylatoxin with spasmogenic and chemotactic activity, is derived from the alpha chain via cleavage with a convertase. The C5b cleavage product forms a complex with complement component C6, initiating formation of the membrane attack complex. Mutations in this gene cause complement component 5 deficiency, leading to recurrent infections, and are associated with susceptibility to liver fibrosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
