Target Information

The protein encoded by this gene is the fifth component of complement (C5), which plays a key role in inflammatory and cell killing processes. C5 consists of alpha and beta polypeptide chains linked by a disulfide bridge. The activation peptide C5a is an anaphylatoxin with potent spasmogenic and chemotactic activity, derived from the alpha chain via cleavage by a convertase. The C5b fragment forms a complex with C6 to initiate the membrane attack complex, involving additional complement components. Mutations in this gene can cause complement component 5 deficiency, leading to recurrent infections, and have been associated with liver fibrosis and rheumatoid arthritis.
