Target Information
Cytokeratins (CK) are intermediate filaments of epithelial cells, found in both keratinizing tissues (e.g., skin) and non-keratinizing cells (e.g., mesothelial cells). Although not traditional endothelial markers, cytokeratins are present in some microvascular endothelial cells.
At least 20 cytokeratins (40–70 kDa, pI 5–8.5) can be identified by 2D gel electrophoresis.
They are classified as:
- Type I (acidic polypeptides)
- Type II (basic polypeptides)
Each epithelial cell expresses at least one member from both classes. Monoclonal antibodies against cytokeratins are valuable tools for tumor identification and classification.
