Target Information

Adenosine Deaminase RNA Specific (ADAR) catalyzes the hydrolytic deamination of adenosine to inosine in double-stranded RNA (dsRNA), known as A-to-I RNA editing. This process can affect gene expression and function in various ways, including mRNA translation, pre-mRNA splicing, RNA stability, and viral genome replication. ADAR edits both viral and cellular RNAs, either at multiple sites (hyper-editing) or specific sites (site-specific editing).

Cellular RNA substrates include:

  • BLCAP (bladder cancer-associated protein)
  • GRIA2 (glutamate receptor)
  • HTR2C (serotonin receptor)
  • GABRA3 (GABA receptor)

Viral RNA substrates include:

  • HCV, VSV, MV, HDV, HIV-1

ADAR1 exhibits both proviral and antiviral effects depending on the virus and mechanism (editing-dependent or independent). High levels of ADAR1 can inhibit HDV replication.
