Target Information

Potassium channels are ubiquitously expressed proteins that perform various functions in excitable and non-excitable cells.
The large conductance, calcium-activated potassium channel (Maxi K⁺) differs from other potassium channels as it is activated by both intracellular calcium increase and membrane depolarization.
This dual activation is due to its structure — a Maxi K⁺ alpha homotetramer containing a voltage sensor and an intracellular calcium-binding domain.
In vascular smooth muscle, an auxiliary beta-subunit (1:1 stoichiometry) modulates the channel by reducing the calcium concentration required to keep the pore open by approximately 5–10 fold.
