Target Information
Members of the inositol hexakisphosphate kinase (IP6K) family, including IP6K1 and IP6K2, have high affinity and selectivity for inositol hexakisphosphate (InsP6) as a substrate. These kinases convert InsP6 to PP-InsP5 but show no catalytic activity with other inositol pyrophosphates. InsP6, which inhibits serine/threonine protein phosphatases, increases calcium influx across the plasma membrane and may regulate insulin exocytosis. IP6K1 was purified as a 54 kDa protein in rat brain extracts, while IP6K1 and IP6K2 in mouse were characterized as 50 kDa and 49 kDa proteins, respectively. IP6K1 also exhibits ATP synthase activity, suggesting a role as a high-energy phosphate donor.
