Target Information
Crystallins are divided into two classes: taxon-specific (enzyme) and ubiquitous. The ubiquitous class constitutes the major proteins of vertebrate eye lens, maintaining transparency and refractive index. Lens fiber cells lose nuclei during development, so crystallins are retained throughout life and are extremely stable.
Mammalian lens crystallins are grouped into alpha, beta, and gamma families, with beta and gamma forming a superfamily. Gamma-crystallins are monomeric, highly symmetrical, and lack connecting peptides and terminal extensions. They are differentially regulated after development.
Four gamma-crystallin genes (gamma-A through gamma-D) and three pseudogenes (gamma-E, gamma-F, gamma-G) form a gene cluster. Mutations or aging can lead to cataract formation.
