Target Information
Crystallins are separated into two classes: taxon-specific (enzyme) and ubiquitous. The ubiquitous class constitutes the major proteins of vertebrate eye lens and maintains lens transparency and refractive index. Lens fiber cells lose nuclei during development, so crystallins are synthesized once and retained, making them highly stable. Mammalian lens crystallins are divided into alpha, beta, and gamma families. Gamma-crystallins are monomeric, highly symmetrical proteins lacking connecting peptides and terminal extensions, and are differentially regulated after early development. Mutations or aging can lead to cataract formation.
