Target Information
Many vertebrate homeobox-containing genes have been identified based on their similarity to Drosophila developmental genes. Members of the DLX gene family contain a homeobox related to that of Distal-less (Dll), a gene expressed in the head and limbs of developing fruit flies.
The Distal-less (DLX) family includes at least six members (DLX1–DLX6), which are postulated to play roles in forebrain and craniofacial development. The DLX2 gene is located in a tail-to-tail configuration with another family member on chromosome 2.
