Background

The protein encoded by this gene belongs to the family of P-type cation transport ATPases, specifically the Na+/K+-ATPases. Na+/K+-ATPase is an integral membrane protein responsible for establishing and maintaining the electrochemical gradients of Na⁺ and K⁺ ions across the plasma membrane. These gradients are essential for osmoregulation, sodium-coupled transport of various molecules, and electrical excitability of nerve and muscle cells. The enzyme consists of two subunits: a large catalytic alpha subunit and a smaller glycoprotein beta subunit. The alpha subunit of Na+/K+-ATPase is encoded by multiple genes, and this gene encodes the alpha 1 isoform. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms have been identified for this gene (RefSeq, May 2009).
