Background
This gene encodes the alpha chain of one of the nonfibrillar collagens. The function of this gene product is not known; however, it has been detected at low levels in all connective tissue-producing cells, suggesting a general role in connective tissues. Unlike most collagens secreted into the extracellular matrix, collagen XIII contains a transmembrane domain localized to the plasma membrane. The transcripts undergo complex splicing involving at least eight exons. Collagen XIII forms a trimer, though the composition of alpha chain isomers is not fully known. Several alternatively spliced transcript variants have been described, but some full-length forms remain undetermined. (RefSeq, Jul 2008)
