Background
This gene encodes the vasopressin receptor type 2 (V2 receptor), a member of the seven-transmembrane-domain G protein-coupled receptor (GPCR) superfamily. It couples to Gs proteins, stimulating adenylate cyclase. The V2 receptor is part of a conserved subfamily that includes V1a, V1b, oxytocin, isotocin, and mesotocin receptors. It binds cyclic nonapeptide hormones and is expressed in kidney tubules—particularly the distal convoluted tubule and collecting ducts—where it responds to arginine vasopressin (AVP) to regulate urine concentration and water homeostasis. Loss of this gene’s function results in Nephrogenic Diabetes Insipidus.
