Background
This gene encodes a chromatin-associated enzyme, poly(ADP-ribosyl)transferase, which modifies various nuclear proteins by poly(ADP-ribosyl)ation. The modification is DNA-dependent and regulates key cellular processes such as differentiation, proliferation, tumor transformation, and DNA damage recovery. Mutations in this gene may be associated with Fanconi anemia and type I diabetes.
