Background
This gene encodes monocyte chemotactic protein 3, a secreted chemokine which attracts macrophages during inflammation and metastasis. It belongs to the C-C chemokine subfamily characterized by two adjacent cysteine residues. MCP-3 is an in vivo substrate of matrix metalloproteinase 2, which degrades components of the extracellular matrix. The gene is part of a C-C chemokine family cluster on chromosome 17q.
