Background
This gene encodes vitamin K-dependent coagulation factor IX that circulates in the blood as an inactive zymogen. It is converted to an active form by factor XIa, which removes the activation peptide to generate a heavy and a light chain linked by disulfide bonds. Activated factor IX plays a key role in the blood coagulation cascade by activating factor X in the presence of Ca²⁺ ions, membrane phospholipids, and factor VIII. Mutations in this gene can cause factor IX deficiency, known as hemophilia B or Christmas disease. Alternative splicing results in multiple transcript variants encoding different isoforms that may undergo similar proteolytic processing. (RefSeq, Sep 2015)
