Target Information
This gene encodes a precursor protein consisting of arginine vasopressin and two associated proteins, neurophysin 2 and a glycopeptide, copeptin. Arginine vasopressin is a posterior pituitary hormone synthesized in the supraoptic and paraventricular nuclei of the hypothalamus. Together with neurophysin 2, it is transported to the neurohypophysis, where it is stored or secreted into the bloodstream. The precursor is activated during axonal transport. Arginine vasopressin functions as a growth factor by enhancing pH regulation, exerts antidiuretic effects on the kidney, and causes peripheral vasoconstriction. It also contracts smooth muscle during parturition and lactation, and plays roles in cognition, adaptation, and regulation of water and cardiovascular functions.
