Component of the cytochrome c oxidase, the last enzyme in the mitochondrial electron transport chain which drives oxidative phosphorylation.
Cytochrome c oxidase catalyzes the reduction of oxygen to water, forming part of the respiratory chain that transfers electrons from NADH and succinate to molecular oxygen, generating an electrochemical gradient used for ATP synthesis.
Electrons from reduced cytochrome c are transferred via copper and heme centers to oxygen, producing water molecules.
