Target Information
Cluster of differentiation 8 (CD8) is a type I transmembrane glycoprotein of the immunoglobulin family, playing a key role in signal transduction, T cell differentiation, and activation. CD8 is mainly expressed on T cells as a disulfide-linked heterodimer (CD8α/CD8β), functioning as a co-receptor with TCR for MHC class I molecules. It is also found on subsets of T cells, NK cells, monocytes, and dendritic cells as CD8α homodimers. Interaction with MHC-I/peptide complexes recruits Lck kinase, leading to lymphokine production, motility, and cytotoxic T lymphocyte (CTL) activation. Activated CTLs are essential for pathogen and tumor cell clearance, and their differentiation is enhanced by IL-2, IL-12, and TGF-β1.
